Letters from Travis

He writes by hand, in blue pen on Russian prison-mail forms and on graph paper. These are some of the pages that reached his family, shown as they arrived.

We blacked out home addresses, the QR codes printed on the prison forms, the names of private people, prison logistics, and a few lines about other people or that the court record does not support. Everything else is his, including his opinions. A transcription follows each scan. Where the two differ, the scan is the record.

29 June 2026. Dear President Donald J. Trump,

I joined the U.S. Air Force in 1989 at age 17, and while studying A/C & refridgeration tech. at the 3776th STUS rose to the rank of senior student leader ("red rope"), receiving three letters of commendation. Just prior to Desert Storm I left the Air Force under honorable conditions.

On May 25th, 2010 I moved to Moscow to begin what had ended up becoming a successful dual career in music and teaching English. All of that changed on June 6th, 2023 when 9 officers stormed my one-room apartment. I was beaten, tortured, forced to watch the sexual molestation of my fiancé, and ultimately set up by those officers. There are videos.

Within hours of my arrest, Russia's state-controlled media rewrote reality and paraded their latest victim. Among other outlandish and unsupportable claims, they (as well as the court's own Telegram channel) told the world that I was a combat veteran who served in Iraq as an Army paratrooper. You know perhaps better than I, Mr. President, the negative personal consequences that result from dishonest, toxic media and courts.

I have been your supporter since before the escalator ride with Melania. I recall your passion for repatriating wrongfully detained Americans expressed during countless rallies. My circumstance is yet another example of two very sad truths: (1) The well-documented practice here of fabricating cases against Americans, especially veterans, to pressure USG for any number of inappropriate purposes. (2) More collateral damage arising from the incompetence of the Biden administration, who then refused to lift a finger to help one of your people. He cared only about his supporters. Pure politics.

Steve Witkoff announced that he was on stand by to fly to Moscow pending the outcome of your 5/19/25 call with Putin. Then the 9-for-9 trade was revealed. That was 406 days ago. Since then my story has been on the cover of Rolling Stone and won the L.A. Press Award for Best Music Reporting of 2025. I doubt I could find the words to overstate the disappointment I experience every moment of every day that thus far my government has chosen not to publically acknowledge what they must already know, and that our 4th estate has endorsed by that award: "I Was Taken Hostage." Hopefully, Mr. President, my mom will turn 76 this year. After 1,120 days of this, I am in need of medical help. Please get me the hell out of here. Please.

Sincerely, Travis Leake

An Open Letter to President Donald Trump. 2.17.2025

I appreciate, Mr. President, that you are now busy fixing a broken America. Putting an end to a very bloody war which all sides agree would never have begun had the 2020 election gone as it should have. Yet, I feel compelled at this moment to bring my plight to your personal attention. I am among your earliest supporters, as your own website can confirm. This fact — without question — contributed meaningfully to the Biden administration's decision to abandon me here.

My name is Travis Leake. I am one of about a dozen Americans still rotting away in a Russian prison. It is unspeakably challenging to write to you without describing the depths of my victimization these past 623 days. I will defer to my legal team who can fill in the pertinent details. They are stunning.

On 6/6/23 I was targeted by known bad officers with the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs. Street cops with a long history of misconduct. Looking for a way to save their careers. They were already being hunted by internal affairs for numerous similar complaints. They needed to arrest an American. Any American. I was beaten and tortured. Forced to watch the sexual molestation of my fiancée in our home. The only evidence against me was proven brought by those officers and planted, and was allegedly found during a search proven illegal.

My trial was pure railroading. All defense motions to include evidence and call witnesses were denied. We implored the court to look at the evidence. The judge based his verdict not on the facts, but only on abstracted portions of the testimony of my co-defendant ex-girlfriend, the prosecution's only witness. Yet, in testimony, she revealed that she had been promised a light sentence to invent charges. Testified I was setup. Saw my injuries. redacted

The U.S. embassy was there. Saw it. They were also there when she said she'd never tell the court the whole truth about my being setup. A U.S. State Dept officer overheard it all, stunned at her admission. Three weeks later the August trade took place. I was left behind like the deplorable garbage they consider me to be.

Mr. President, this ordeal is yet another example of the collateral damage that resulted from the incompetence of the previous administration. Their decisions and policies fostered an unnecessarily adversarial environment conducive to this type of misconduct. It is my hope, and my family's, that you will agree it is long past time for my Designation as a Wrongfully Detained American. And, that it would be most appropriate to now prioritize my repatriation.

With Respect, Travis Leake

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

An Open Letter to the People of the United States and to President Biden

I want to begin by apologizing to America. Apologize for allowing myself to remain in harm's way. For giving the adversaries of our national interest an opportunity to box the administration into an untenable corner. For making our elected president have to choose between two competing moral obligations: the enforcement of our laws on the one hand, and the life and liberty of one of his fellow citizens on the other.

I beg forgiveness from my country for my poor judgment — my arrogance — in thinking that just because I conscientiously refrained from involving myself in politically controversial topics, both publicly and online, that I was somehow immune to potential danger in Russia.

I was wrong.

On June 6th, 2023 at just after noon Moscow time, as my fiancé and I were deciding which movie to watch, four uniformed and masked Russian tactical officers, armed with assault weapons, stormed our apartment without warning. No less than five armed plain‑clothes detectives from the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs followed closely behind.

I immediately raised my hands in surrender. I was forced to the ground and handcuffed so tightly that my wrists bled. I still have scars from that, even months afterwards. They were looking for money and drugs, acting on a tip from an ex‑girlfriend who had been, only two days prior, arrested with a large amount of narcotics she was distributing. She was promised a lighter sentence in exchange for implicating someone else.

When the authorities learned that one of her acquaintances was an American, any American, a chain of events began, culminating in my current imprisonment in Russia already 86 days.

Over a period of several hours, the officers sent to my home wrecklessly destroyed my belongings, my recording studio, furniture, everything, in a fruitless and ultimately unsuccessful attempt to find large sums of money, narcotics, or absolutely anything with which to justify arresting me. I was kicked, punched, dragged half‑naked by my handcuffs like a marionette and ultimately forced to watch the police sexually molest my fiancé.

When finally the[y] had accepted the fact that there was nothing incriminating in my home with which to justify arresting me, they threw a packet of drugs on my head and watched it hit the floor.

Since being arrested I have been housed in four separate facilities and placed in 13 different cells. I am not permitted to speak to anyone in my family. Not permitted to know any news, or even what is happening outside these walls. I am not even permitted a Bible.

I am no one special. I am not a famous athlete, or a war hero, or a rich businessman. I am a regular citizen caught up in a geopolitical chessmatch not of my making, or under my control.

I entered prison at 92 kilograms. I have been starved for months now. I am expected to eat spoiled food, ungutted, uncooked raw fish, and I cannot force myself, even in these conditions, to infect my body with toxic substances.

I now weigh about 72 kg. Just in 3 months I have lost 20 kg. That's about 40 pounds. I am 5'10". I do not have access to medicine to deal with a chronic health condition. They refuse to provide it. I have been housed with pedophiles, murderers, extremists, and inmates with AIDS.

The Russian government is actively trying to ensure that when the time comes to trade me away to the U.S. in exchange for actual criminals, that I will either be beyond saving in the long term, or outright insane.

I have no time to endure this charade of a process. This is personal for them. They find joy in my daily misery. I will not survive much longer. I don't have another 10 pounds of fat left to donate to my survival.

I beseech President Biden, and the people of America to demand my immediate and unequivocal repatriation to the United States. Now. Today! While there is still time to save whatever remains of me. While there is still a me to save.

I do not wish to either be a martyr, nor a cassus beli. I want to come home.

Please help. Time is not on my side.

I won't survive this much longer.

Friday, Aug. 2, 2024 · Day 424

redacted Of course, last night just before 11pm Moscow time, I learned that my countrymen largely went home. I'm happy for them. J.F.'s words have been ringing in my head all day. For example, just now on Russia's Channel 1 program "60 Minutes," the main Kremlin propaganda channel (and broadcast) — they announced that Russia offered up Marc Fogel, but the Biden admin. declined. I have long assumed that based on what I know of his case. I hope one day he survives this ordeal, and is able to return home. redacted

Monday, August 5, 2024 · Day 427

This entry I would normally make in my journals. This type. Yet, it seems somehow concurrently relevant given the circumstances we're all in the midst of. Today, all day, on every channel, like some hot pop song being played in heavy rotation, the video evidence used against both PW and EG, released by the FSB, has been saturating the public's shared consciousness throughout the country.

In defense of PW's arrest, they showed a video of PW brushing his teeth in his hotel room as someone walks in and hands him a flash drive. Then it cuts to him handcuffed, sitting on a twin-sized hotel bed surrounded by masked officers. How is that evidence of guilt? What's on the flash drive? Why did that man walk in and hand it to him? Why, perhaps it needs be asked, was his hotel room outfitted with a fixed-position hidden camera — in the bathroom? Setup anyone? The camera's angle was obviously approximately 7 feet up.

To justify the arrest of EG, they presented a short video including a discussion in private about the WSJ's policy of protecting the anonymity of sources. Who was he talking with? His face was blurred out, as they do with all officers/agents. Why was someone positioned to record the interaction? What context led to that meeting? What did EG do that any good journalist on Earth wouldn't do? He was obviously given the DeLorean treatment. Someone contacts him and offers him information about an interesting topic, what is he going to say? No? That's HIS JOB. (Who's to say he would have ever published whatever that was?) Clearly setup.

And what will they offer to the media to justify my arrest one fine day? A video of me opening my own door? Of my lying down in my home surrounded by sex toys? Of officers asking me "Chyom Sila?" I'm sure, in the most desperate circumstances, they could try to deep-fake something. None of the propaganda pieces about me ever pretend to show any evidence, as they always love to do. I wonder why that is? Likely just an honest oversight. I had 8000 rubles in my wallet and 14,000 in the bank at the moment of my arrest. I was 5 days late on part of my rent, and owed 30,000 (or so) rubles to Yandex Split. Seriously damning money. For them. Certainly drug lord material. Sigh…

Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024 · Day 432

Unlike P.W., E.G., B.G., and G.B., I live/lived in Moscow. For quite a long time. Other than when I went back to the USA between Oct of 2014 and Jan of 2017, I called Moscow home since May 25, 2010. So, unlike all of them, I lost literally everything. I have nothing. No clothes, no memories, all of my personal effects, photos, souvenirs of a lifetime, personal treasures — all are gone. Poof. Gone. The police took my computer, ext. drives, flash drives, and stole my phone. Please ask/direct redacted to petition the court to return those to me ASAP. They contain all my writing, my music files (I'm a producer), and all my life's personal memories. With those items returned, I can attempt one day to reconstruct my life. redacted

Monday, August 19, 2024 · Day 441

No other American in memory has had to deal with this. Not being left to rot in Butirka. Not with such raging, libelous, ubiquitous reporting. redacted But at SIZO-5 he can call twice a week to his family in English. I can't because, once again, I'm in Butirka. No English calls, or any language other than Russian is allowed. It's why I think they insisted I come here, to keep me entirely isolated. Bonus suffering. SIZO-2 screws you.

Nobody from America has had to go through what I've had to go through. What I still go through every moment of every second of every minute, of every hour, of every day, of every week, of every month, of every year… Why wasn't I on that plane on August 1st? They forgot someone. They forgot me… Left me to rot.

I was convicted on July 18th 2024. EG on July 19th, 2024. Alsu on July 22nd 2024. Why am I not hugging my family? Sleeping on a mattress thicker than a towel? Using a toilet that works in privacy? Taking a bath? Eating real food? Seeing the sky? Getting medical attention? Not worrying about being killed by some idiot? Not panicked by the war propaganda that never ceases? Why??? I don't understand… I need to come home now. Today. While I can…

The day Marc Fogel was freed

2.11.2025 redacted And I am a hostage. They know here. Only corruption explains everything from A–Z. All the direct evidence supports everything I've been saying, without exception. They know. Maybe they didn't at first, but they for sure know now. Even after all I've been through, I have no hate in my heart for Russia. This ordeal started w/ 3 bad cops and a scared ex-girlfriend. The system here isn't equipped to deal with this kind of fraud. I forgive them. Yet I still deserve justice, and the freedom they stole from me. Nothing and no one can make me whole again. That's out of reach. Forever. Only my shadow remains. redacted

2.12.2025 — Marc Fogel was freed. Good. Another admitted (and clearly) guilty person goes home before me… they left the two innocent people here… again… And now we know that our people knew it was coming, this is why the scheduled interview… I'm glad he got to go home… Maybe I'm next? Gonna go cry now… This is why I said we need to make sure Trump knows about my situation… so they don't LEAVE ME HERE AGAIN. At least this tells us Trump can achieve what Biden could not… only took 3 weeks… 8/15/21 → 2/12/25.

His family flew to Moscow on a Gulfstream to meet him. So you'll know before me. Make sure your passport is good. Guess Marc Fogel and I aren't in the same boat. Or plane. Or country. Or hell… MOM, if the hostage situation follows the same logic as the Israel–Hamas one, the release of hostages will come in phases. We can't call it a trade… Russia got back no one, just released him. More proof he was a pawn, in the end, just like the rest of us. That's at least hopeful. He had been here longer. I wasn't guilty though, I should have been first. But, glad for him. Jealous. He was in custody 1277 days.

Good luck on the interviews I know J.F. will arrange in the wake of this diplomatic victory. I'm coming home, one day. The media here are showing videos of drugs being pulled from Fogel's shoes at the airport. What will they one day show their people about me? Me being tortured in my apartment, bleeding on the floor handcuffed? What a joke. ** Now they're reporting that it was a prisoner trade. Good. Even better.

2/12 — I just got your letter. I'm in tears. Hope I see you soon. Please God let this be over. Guess I'm Designated Now… Love…

Got your 2/11 letter at 2:30pm on 2/12. Time to leave this. redacted Hell… please… BTW — Fogel WAS A TRUMP GUY — just like me…

7/18/26 – Hredacted

(#1) I want to thank everyone who has visited this site, taken the time to learn the facts, shared the link, and spread the word. My family and I have been through a lot these past 3 years and counting. And while we have specific reasons to feel hopeful, the fact remains that I am still not free. It's not a simple thing getting the attention of the leader of the free world. Thus far we've failed, but haven't stopped trying. I've been writing to President Trump since 2023 when this all began, even before he had secured the Republican nomination for his current term. None of us can know what it will take to finally reach him, but I have faith that whenever that day comes, this nightmare will end in short order.

(#2) I've had no alternative but to watch Russian state news for the past 3 years. When I was kidnapped they were alluding to World War III. Once Trump took power all of that changed. Putin himself stated publically that the current relationship between the U.S. and Russia has now risen to such an unprecedented level that "greeting President Trump in Moscow for a state visit will demand more than simply sitting down for tea." Once President Trump learns the details and sees for himself the evidence of my case, he won't need more than a moment to know what to do. It is obvious. It is documented. It's on video, audio, in written form, and thus undeniable. He will be as outraged as he should be. He will call President Putin asking simply this: "Are you aware of what your people have been doing to my citizen?" They will have a brief discussion. They will make a deal. Then I will go home. I have a sneaking suspicion that those responsible for my setup weren't acting under executive orders. They're exactly what the Senior Investigator of their region's Investigative Committee called 'em, "bad cops." It's probable they'll soon learn what it's like living where they put me.

(for you, and J.F.) 15 July 2026 – Day 1136. Hi Moredacted

(#3) I've lived long enough to have learned that most people have little time to devote to other people's problems. We all have our own lives and difficulties. My family and I are realistic enough to understand that a situation like mine can only be solved by those in our government entrusted with such responsibility. It can't be a simple task. The easiest thing, and most helpful thing, that you can do is to share this link. There's probably even a button somewhere on the page you're seeing now. If not, there should be. This can be your good deed for the day. //

(#4) There are many things going on now to try and bring me, as well as the others locked away in Russia, home. Some we are aware of as they are known publically, others we can only guess at based on logic and events. It's not easy. What we know for certain is that even Russia knows full well that my conviction was entirely baseless, procedurally illegal, and violent. Anyone with access to even my prison records knows that I arrived at the pre-trial prison from the police station on 6.9.2023 bruised, beaten, and bloody. Did I kick myself in the chest while handcuffed? Anyone who knows how to read can see the violations of police procedures for themselves committed by the arresting officers. Procedures designed specifically to prevent evidence planting. Even the judge knew, but was either unwilling or unable to follow his own laws and had to change materially, or outright delete numerous key pieces of testimony to defend a baseless verdict. We have the court audio to prove it. ● We don't need to guess, or ask for trust. // I love you, Travis

Statement #5: a timeline

Written for visitors to this sitePrison-mail form № 20812826 · IK-6, Vladimir Oblast

His own timeline of the diplomacy around his case, as he followed it on Russian state television.

Transcription

(Hi Mom, & J.F.) 7/19/2026 (#5) Not only was my arrest a pre-planned setup implemented by known bad cops, my court process nothing short of a primer on legal rights violations, obfuscation of evidence, testimony fraud, the ignoring of police misconduct and criminality, and objective, written violations by the judge of even Russian high court precedents, but there is also an undeniable diplomatic element that cannot be ignored. When examined in context it becomes clear that not only was my life stolen from me for illegitimate political purpose, but the desire of the USG not to essentially reward Russia's bad behavior is the last remaining barrier to my redemption; I'm being victimized on both ends for entirely inappropriate political cause. This is an impasse which only publicity and public outcry are likely to overcome. Here is a timeline of some of the major events relevant to this understanding:

  • Dec. 2024 – Russian Deputy Aleksandr Overchuk goes on NBC saying Russia will not discuss prisoner trades until the U.S. helps them with Ukraine. The journalist is in shock.
  • 5/19/2025 – The 9 for 9 prisoner trade is agreed to during a call between Trump & Putin
  • Jun. 2025 – My story is on the cover of Rolling Stone, "I Was Taken Hostage."
  • Jan. 2026 – That story wins the L.A. Press Award for Best Music Reporting of 2025
  • Mar. 2026 – During an online chat hosted by the Foley Foundation, the USG publically links the prisoner exchange to Ukraine. This by itself is all the legal justification one needs to declare all of us Wrongfully Detained. It is criteria #1 of the Levinson Act.
  • 4/29/2026 – Trump·Putin call about the prisoner trade.
  • 5/5/26 & 5/8/26 – Rubio·Lavrov have calls. Rubio says in a Senate hearing that his discussions are about more than just Ukraine.
  • 5/20/2026 – Exactly one year after the trade is agreed to, Russian media says Steve Witkoff will be in Moscow in the coming weeks. Coincidence?
  • 6/14/2026 – Trump·Putin call, the media here says Witkoff coming in days.
  • 7/4/2026 – Trump·Putin call, the media here says Witkoff preparing to come.
  • 7/11/2026 – Russian Media (TASS) reports Witkoff's visit still on the agenda.
  • 7/12/2026 – Witkoff says he's not coming as there's "no point."
  • 7/16/2026 – New sanctions against Russia are passed by the U.S. Senate.

Can there be any doubt that we are diplomatic pawns? No. And this is the #1 legal condition according to U.S. law to declare someone wrongfully detained.

Statement #6: two years after the exchange

Written for visitors to this sitePrison-mail form № 21326814 · IK-6, Vladimir Oblast

Written two years to the day after the Aug. 1, 2024 exchange.

Transcription

(#6) 8·1·2026 – DAY 1153|94 Two years ago today I watched Paul, Evan, and Alsu go home. Two of the three were sentenced after me, within days of me. I've always believed that Russia did that because they had assumed they made the wrongfulness of my situation so obvious, so blatant, so undeniable, that I would be included at the last moment. Yet, I'm still here. Three weeks prior to that trade, in the courtroom, a State Department officer overheard my co-defendant accuser, ex-girlfriend, loudly and unabashedly admit that she "will never tell the court the whole truth about my setup." That officer was only two feet away from me as she blurted out her confession. We were making eye contact. That officer's face was riddled with shock at the revelation. I said to that officer, "Now you're a witness." That officer nodded with their eyes. "Now, you know." "Don't worry," that officer said, "I got this." What was witnessed was included in an official state department report. Yet, the Biden administration was uninterested in my recovery. Likely because I was not a fan of either him, nor of the previous Democratic administration. Their decision to abandon a known innocent American in the Russian prison system is both unconscionable, and further justification of my distaste for 21st century identity politics. During my appeal, two State Department officers confirmed in their official reports on my court session that my civil rights were violated, to wit the state-provided translator was wholly incompetent, and reported opposite meanings in their discussions with said translator. That my entire ordeal is replete with consistent violations of basic human and legal rights cannot be disputed seriously. Those violations are not only confirmed by the transcripts and the audio recordings from court, the physical evidence which consists of a translator competency document wholly lacking any English-language proficiency of any kind, but also government generated U.S. State Department reports that (all) consistently indicate that at no point during my arrest, search, interrogation, arraignment, trial, appeal, and even extending to the legal documents I was provided by law, did the Russian government make more than a half-hearted and insincere effort to ensure that I understood what was going on. Watch the video from June 8th 2023 that the police forced me to make. I said, "I don't even know what I'm accused of doing." It took months to even begin to understand the specifics. When we proved in court that it was nonsense, the judge closed his eyes to objective, hard evidence, deleted key testimony (that was) in my favor, and excused (or ignored) mountains of police misconduct. Why am I still not publically declared wrongfully detained? What part was lawful? None of it.

7.20.2026 – Day 1141, 106 til Mid·Terms. Hi Mom and Prayer Warriors! The past few months had seen a lot of progress towards ending this nightmare. Three calls between Trump & Putin, and months of press announcements that Witkoff was coming to Moscow. We know why he was coming. Then at the last minute, just 8 days ago, it all fell apart. As a result, four days ago the U.S. Senate passed more sanctions against Russia. This is what I believe was the cause; I put little faith in coincidence. It seems obvious to me that Russia promised to free me, along with some of the others from the list of "9", but reneged at the last minute. As Mom often says, this is a rollercoaster. I've often wondered if the high points, like seeing progress, are the slow climbs up, or the invigoration we feel during that quick ride down. This particular theme park attraction needs a fitting name. I'll give it some thought. Two nights ago I was reading Romans 5. I tend to pray for guidance then flip to a random page. This time though, my cloth bookmark built into the binding was already there. Verse 3 says that we should boast of our troubles as they produce endurance, and that brings God's approval, and that creates hope. Challenge accepted. My family should be brimming with hope with all that we've suffered and endured. Thank you all for the years of emotional support you have each in varying degrees provided my mother. Situations like mine are some kind of inverted lottery. I neither bought a ticket, chose numbers, nor had any interest in winning. Yet the prize patrol came around one fateful evening in June of '23 and here I still remain. I would have preferred to see balloons and even Ed McMahon at my door instead of masked tactical officers pointing AK47s at my head and blinding me with a strobe light, screaming at me in a language I still barely speak. Yet, Fate isn't something we get to choose. I know there is a plan. God's plan. I was meant to live through this, to be a witness. It is impossible to forget this kind of pain, misery, injustice, and suffering. I will carry the scars of all of this for the rest of my days. As the Bible says, the truth shall be known.
